Rail yard Bioremediation Program: Custom Biologicals’ Approach
Project Format
Rail Yard Remediation
The bioremediation of rail yard ballast and ties involves a systematic process executed by a two-person team. This process includes three primary procedures: pretreatment, high-pressure washing, and the application of a specialized bioremediation product (Custom HC) along with nutrients.
Procedure 1: Pretreatment at the Rail Yard
- Steps: Rocks and ties coated in oil, grease, and diesel fuel are saturated with a biodegradable solvent.
- Application Rate: 1 gallon of solvent per 5 linear yards of track, applied best at 30 yards per hour.
- Purpose: This step loosens extensive grime, including hydrocarbons, from the ties, ballast, and rocks.
Procedure 2: High-Pressure Washing
- Steps: Following pretreatment (within 30 minutes), high-pressure water washing is carried out by the crew.
- Purpose: The washing removes oil, grease, and diesel fuel, depositing it onto the soil below.
Procedure 3: Application of Custom HC and Nutrients
- Steps: Custom HC, a biological hydrocarbon digestant, and nutrients are sprayed on the ballast and soil.
- Application Rate: 1 gallon per linear yard, at a pace of 30 linear yards per hour.
- Purpose: Hydrocarbon-digesting bacteria in Custom HC metabolize the contaminants (oil, grease, and diesel fuel) in the soil. This digestion provides both a carbon and energy source over time.
Remediation Result:
This approach offers immediate safety and cosmetic benefits by removing contaminants from the surface and depositing them for soil digestion. Over time, hydrocarbons are fully digested in the soil.
Sub-Surface Bioremediation
The sub-surface process involves injecting Custom HC and nutrients into the soil via specialized procedures carried out by a two-person team.
Procedure 1: Sub-Surface Injection
- Steps: Injection of Custom HC and nutrients into the soil reaches a depth of 3 feet, targeting areas between the ties and across the 15-foot width of the soil. Spacing between injection points is adjusted based on soil composition, typically around 1 foot apart.
Procedure 2: Surface Application (If Required)
- Steps: Surface applications of Custom HC, nutrients, and hydrogen peroxide are conducted later, as needed, based on lab analysis of collected soil samples.
- Analysis Location: Samples are analyzed in the Boca Raton Laboratory to assess nutrient levels and contaminant degradation.
- Execution: A local contractor, guided by Custom Biologicals, performs additional applications if necessary.
Bioremediation Products for the Rail Yard
Custom HC
Custom HC features a synergistic group of hydrocarbon-metabolizing bacteria. These organisms consume hydrocarbons efficiently and are classified as Type I by the American Type Culture Collection. They are non-pathogenic and safe for use.
Nutrients
The nutrient formula includes olephilic micro-nutrients plus other essential components like nitrogen, phosphate, and vitamins. These substances ensure maximum bacterial growth and effective hydrocarbon digestion.
